Davenport Pulls Away Late to Sweep Cleary

From Cleary University Athletics

(Grand Rapids, MI)– The Cleary Cougar ACHA were in Grand Rapids to take on the Davenport Panthers in game two of their weekend series Saturday evening.

The Panthers scored three goals in the opening period, and added another early in the second on a power play, to take a 4-0 lead.  Cleary would storm back to cut that lead to one goal, as they scored three unanswered goals in the second period.

Bennett Sheppard got things started, when he scored on the power play, with an assist from Wes Smith, making the score 4-1.  Brendyn Galloner added the team’s second power play goal, with assists from Bennett Sheppard and Wes Smith, and Jonny Gardiner added the third power play goal, with an assist from Ben Gledhow, to make the score 4-3 in favor of Davenport.  That score would hold into the final twenty minutes.  Unfortunately for the Cougars, Davenport struck twice in a matter of 16 seconds to retake their three goal advantage, and added two insurance goals late to take the game by an 8-3 margin.

Liam Kocur would suffer the loss in goal, making 40 saves on 48 shots faced.

Cleary finishes the fall semester with a 9-15 record.  The Cougars will resume WHAC-tion on January 5, when they host the Indiana Tech Warriors at 140 Ice Den.  The puck will drop at 8:00 PM.
