MANDAN, ND – Down a goal after the opening period, #11 University of Mary reeled off six straight goals to claim a 7-4 win over #25 Iowa State University and give the Marauders a sweep on opening weekend over the visiting Cyclones.
Joe Gronholz and Hunter Mangen paced the Marauders with two goals apiece as UMary scored seven goals for a second straight game to open up the 2024-25 season.
Jake Murray provided the Marauders an early lead less than four minutes into the game. Iowa State responded with a pair of goals and entered intermission with a 2-1 lead.
UMary entered the second period on fire. Gronholz tied the contest with a power play goal just 84 seconds into the middle stanza. Nick Bradshaw, who scored the Marauders opening goal on Saturday, gave UMary the lead at the 6:03 mark. Less than two minutes later Mangen scored the first of his two goals to push the home advantage to 4-2. The native of Dacona, CO, followed with his second goal as Marauder with under three minutes to play in the second.
The Marauders offense onslaught continued with a pair of early goals in the third period. In less than two minutes into the final stanza both Gronholz and Michael Heitkamp tallied for UMary to put the game out of reach. ISU tacked on a pair of power play goals to the scoreboard late in the contest.
Once again the Marauders dominated the shot chart, taking 52 shots and allowing 26. Marino Ramirez earned his second straight win in net after finishing with 22 saves.
Several Marauders joined Gronholz and Mangen with multi-point games. Murray had a goal and an assist. Dylan Thompson, Alex Senf, Derek Dropik and Crae Dawson all had a pair of assists.
Overall 11 Marauders produced either a goal or an assist in the game.
UMary improves to 2-0 on the season. ISU is 0-2.
The Marauders next host Williston State College on Saturday, September 21. Game time is 7 pm. Prior to the game, UMary will hold an ACHA Men’s Division II reunion game at 5 pm.
