BOISE, Idaho — The 13th annual Putting Senior Hunger on Ice hockey game takes over Idaho Central Arena on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Proceeds from the game go to help Meals on Wheels Metro Boise serve food to seniors in need in southwest Idaho.

The Boise State Hockey Club will take on the University of Denver Hockey Club in the game.

This is the 13th year Boise State has worked with Meals on Wheels, raising a total of more than $400,000, which is equivalent to 80,000 meals.

Metro Meals on Wheels CEO Grant Jones said it’s special to see younger generations excited to give back to older generations.

“It’s really a meaningful and impactful event, partly because of that cross-generational aspect with young hockey players and seniors,” Jones said. “They come out and they help with meal preparation on Friday, the day before the game.”

Meals on Wheels Metro Boise serves more than 2,000 meals to seniors each weekday around southwest Idaho.

Tickets for the Putting Senior Hunger on Ice hockey game are $15 and still available.

“It’s really important because all of us are moving in that direction of aging, and for many people, there’s food insecurity. They don’t have anyone to take care of them. They don’t have anyone to look in on them.” Jones said. “So, this is a program where we provide a nutritious meal every day, but it’s also a safety check. We get to check to make sure those seniors are okay, and they get to have contact with someone from the outside world.”

Volunteers and donors are needed year round to prepare and deliver meals.
