ADRIAN, Mich. — The Adrian College Men’s ACHA Division 3 hockey team took down Butler University in a thrilling two-game set at the Arrington Ice Arena this past weekend. The Adrian Bulldogs bested the Butler Bulldogs 4-3 on Saturday night and 9-4 on Sunday afternoon.

Saturday’s opening contest went back and forth between both Bulldog teams. Butler opened the scoring in the first minute, but Adrian bounced back with two goals of their own, one from Solyom Andras and one from Anthony Alfonsi. In the second period, Butler bounced back to tie the game, setting up an exciting third period of play. Just over three minutes into the third period, Butler scored again to take the lead, but Adrian’s Adam Hoff quickly answered back to tie it at 3-3. With the game knotted at 3 in the dying seconds, a Butler penalty resulted in a penalty shot for the Bulldogs with 21 seconds remaining on the clock. Andras stepped up to the plate for Adrian and scored his second of the game on a beautiful post-and-in wrist shot to take the 4-3 lead. Adrian held off Butler in the last 20 seconds of play to secure the late heroic victory. Senior goaltender, Rex Goldberg, played well for his team in goal, stopping 21 of 24 shots on net. AJ Guibord collected two assists for Adrian in the win.

Adrian and Butler exceeded expectations for the weekend, putting together another exciting performance on Sunday. After a scoreless first period, the two teams exploded for seven goals in the second period, with Adrian leading 4-3 after two. Scoring for Adrian in the middle frame was Andras, Henry Darnell, Brett Whitten, and Devin Bennett. More exciting action continued in the third stanza as Adrian and Butler tagged on six more goals, with five of them coming for Adrian. Guibord tallied twice including once while short-handed, while Owen Barber, Captain Evan Bliss, and Alfonsi (SHG) rounded out the scoring. Guibord stayed hot, ending his night with four points, good enough for six on the weekend. Goalie, Aidan Knox, turned aside 37 pucks on 41 shots faced for his third win of the season.

The MD3 Bulldogs will prepare for a MCHC conference series with Lawrence Tech next weekend. The two teams will face-off in Redford on Friday, November 22 at 5:00 PM and then at the Arrington Ice Arena on Sunday, November 24 at 1:00 PM.
