HAMMOND, Ind. – Calvin picked up a 7-4 win over previously unbeaten Purdue-Northwest Friday night to improve to 6-0-1 on the season.
Calvin led 3-2 after one period of play and 5-4 after two periods of play before putting it away with two third period goals and a stellar defensive effort down the stretch.
Calvin received first period goals from Kyle VanDusen and Declan Curtis to take a 2-0 lead but the Pride scored two late second half goals to tie the score after one period.
In period two, Calvin took a 3-2 lead on a power-play goal by Steven Ickes. Senior Jacob Siebenga then notched his 100th career point with a power play goal to give Calvin a 4-2 advantage.
After Purdue-Northwest scored to make it 4-3, Ian Elkins rapped one in the back of the cage to give the Knights a 5-3 lead. The Pride scored a late second half goal to make it a one-goal game heading into the final frame.
Ickes then came up clutch midway through the third, stealing the puck with a determined back-check, whirling and deking the goaltender with a shot inside the near post to give Calvin a 6-4 lead.
VanDusen then hooked up for his second goal of the game off a feed from Siebenga to make it 7-4 and salt the game away.
Calvin outshot Purdue-Northwest 48-28. Freshman Carlos Siso picked up his fourth win of the season in goal while registering 24 saves against a Purdue-Northwest team that dipped to 5-1-0 on the season.
COACHES COMMENT: “Purdue Northwest is a good team that has been steamrolling their opponents so far this season,” said Calvin head coach Mike Petrusma. “We did a great job in the first period, got sloppy in the second and played a picture perfect third period. We will expect a push-back effort from them tomorrow night so a lot of fan support would be great.”
