Collecting 30 Goals, ETBU Stays Hot in TCHC Sweeping TCU

MANSFIELD, Texas – Sweeping another series in the Texas Collegiate Hockey Conference, East Texas Baptist University netted 30 goals and a shutout over Texas Christian University. ETBU is now 14-2 and ranked #4 in the ACHA West Region.

In game one, Filip Soderström tallied six goals and two assists while Mitchell Dolese and Dominic Desjardins each claimed hat tricks. The remaining three goals were scored by Matt Duncan, Blake Branum, and Caleb Goudreau. Tyler Fitzgerald was in between the pipes securing his first shut-out of the season stopping all 10 shots.

In Saturday’s tilt, Spencer Mills and Tim Zittel both tallied hat tricks. Dominic Desjardin also scored two more goals for the weekend. The remaining seven goals were scored by Soderström, Duncan, Goudreau, Caleb Kerns, Bowen Buchanan, Jason Guntow, and Carson Loos. Angus Laing defended the crease, stopping 14 out of the 15 shots.

GAME 1: ETBU 15, TCU 0

ETBU came away with five goals in the first period as Duncan scored the first out at the 15:14 mark off of a pass from Trevor Begley. Barely two minutes later, Assistant Captain Soderström started his seven-goal weekend with a goal assisted by Zittel. Goudreau took advantage of their third Power Play (PP) of the period and grabbed his only goal of the evening with help from Soderström with 7:45 left. Captain Dolese scored the first goal of his hat trick with help from Zittel and Guntow while on the PP. Soderström grabbed his second goal of the night and last of the period, unassisted, with just 1:07 left until the first intermission for the 5-0 lead.

In the second period, Desjardin started out his hat trick by scoring a goal with help from Ethan Huante just under three minutes in. Three minutes later, Branum found the back of the net with some help from Avery Cook to score his first collegiate goal. Desjardins went to work a minute later to grab his second goal of the evening. Three minutes passed and Zittel and Goudreau successfully set Dolese up to score his second goal of the game. With just 6:09 to go, Soderström grabbed his third goal of the night putting ETBU up, 10-0. At the four-minute mark, Dolese and Caleb Kerns helped Desjardin secure his hat trick as ETBU took an 11-0 lead. To conclude the period, Soderström scored his 4th goal assisted by Begley and Guntow to end the second period, 12-0.

Despite Spencer Mills’ big hit that led to the game ending 10:00 minutes early due to the glass falling out of the boards and onto the ice, ETBU managed to add three more goals to make it 15-0. Two of those goals were scored by Soderström, giving him a total of eight points in this game. The final goal camb by Dolese three minutes before the game was called.

GAME 2 ETBU 15, TCU 1

The second game looked a lot like the first one on Friday. ETBU went to work early in the first period as Mills scored the first goal with 16:00 left. Just 00:17 later, Zittel grabbed the first goal of his hat trick with help from Guntow and Kerns. With 12:50 left in the period, Desjardins tallied his fourth goal of the weekend with assistance from Loos and Guntow. Shortly after, ETBU had two penalties and played the next two minutes with a 5-on-3 disadvantage.  They managed to hold off TCU while on the Penalty Kill (PK). After two minutes of even strength, Buchanan scored his first goal of the season with help from Devon Baird and Corliss Emery with 7:13 to go. Guntow grabbed his first goal of the weekend and ETBU’s last goal of the first with 1:17 left in for the 5-0 advantage.

The second period started off much like the first as Loos scored his first goal of the weekend off of a pass from Emery with 15:43 remaining. A little over a minute later, Zittel was assisted by Soderström and Begley to tally his second goal of the game moving the score to 7-0 with 13:18 left until the second intermission. With 6:55 left, Mills claimed his second goal of the night assisted by Baird and Guntow. Only 00:46 later, Zittel secured his hat trick with help from Goudreau and Soderström. Leaving 2:48 in the second period, the Horned Frogs took advantage of a Tiger penalty and scored their only goal of the game as ETBU was up, 9-1.  With just 1:17 remaining, Kerns grabbed his first goal of the game assisted by Desjardins and Branum. Desjardins scored the final goal of the period with just 0:49 left making it 11-1 ending the second period.

The Tigers spent most of the final period on a PK but managed to hold off TCU and score four more goals. Mills scored his hat trick goal just 3:08 making it 12-1. At the halfway mark, Goudreau scored his first goal of the game, assisted by Soderström with 9:55 left (13-1). Duncan then scored his second goal of the weekend with help from Begley pushing it to a 14-1 lead. The final goal of the game was scored by Soderström on a power pay assisted by Dolese as ETBU took the game, 15-1.
