Despite Logan Berggren’s first career hat trick, the University of Jamestown hockey team fell 4-3 in overtime to Dakota College at Bottineau. The loss drops the Jimmies to 3-4-2 overall on the season. The win improves the Lumberjacks record to 2-1 overall on the season
The Jimmies got their first shot on goal as Cole Haukaas got his shot easily saved with 17:58 to go. The Jimmies’ Andrew Clark rang the iron and the goalie, Jordan Berschiminsky gave his right post a little thank you rub with his glove with 10:10 to go. With 8:02 to go, Logan Berggren picked up the puck, skated down the right side, and threw one on net that managed to find its way through Berschiminsky, giving the Jimmies the 1-0 lead. Around a minute later Jimmies goalie Dylan Ossachuk had to respond with a sprawling save to keep the game where it was.
A little bit over a minute into the second period, the Jimmies’ Aiden Potas took a puck from behind the net and sent it in front to Berggren who put it glove side past Berschiminsky, to make the game 2-0 in favor of UJ. With 16:52 to go in the second period, Zane Macdonald for the Jacks took the puck off a deflection off the boards and past Ossachuk to make the game 2-1. Berggren scored the hat trick with 14:14 to go in the second period as he took the puck in front and put it glove side past Berschiminsky, to make the game 3-1. This was Berggeren’’s first career hat trick. The only hat thrown on the ice was from Jimmies public address announcer Conrad Volsch, who promptly got it back when the refs tossed it out of play. Despite the hat trick, the loss sours the achievement for Berggren.
“It felt good when we were up 3-0 but right now, to be honest, I have no enjoyment because we just lost. I’m pissed the fourth one didn’t count,” Berggren said. “I’m pissed that I didn’t win the game. So, I guess I’m happy but a little frustrated.”
The Lumberjacks would get one past Ossachuk when they kept battling in front and managed to pull the Jimmies goalie out of position and JJ Adams was the beneficiary putting the puck into the wide open net with 11:36 to go in the second period. A poke check from Potas for the Jimmies saved what would’ve been an empty net goal for the Jacks to tie it up. With 5:59 to go in the second period, Ryan Patterson for the Jacks stood at the faceoff circle and one timed a puck past Ossachuk to tie the game up at 3.
With 16:58 to go, Susinski took a shot from the blue line through traffic that was frozen by Berschiminsky. The Jimmies bench exploded when Decapitie laid out a player for the Jacks in the Jimmies defensive zone with ten minutes to go. Berschiminsky robbed the Jimmies with around 3 minutes to go, moving across his crease to save a shot and push it wide. Despite both teams pushing vigorously over the last six minutes, the game went to overtime.
Early in overtime, Joben Smith for the Lumberjacks picked up a rebound in front and put it goal bound but Ossachuk leaped on the puck to force the faceoff. The Jimmies celebrated scoring but the refs immediately waved the goal off as he determined Berschiminsky had done enough to keep the puck out and froze it with 3:12 to go in the overtime period. If the goal had counted it would’ve been Berggren’s fourth of the night. The ref’s reported explanation to Jimmies head coach Dean Stork was that he blew the whistle before the puck crossed the line. After another robbery save from Berschiminsky, Ian Amsbaugh skated the puck down the ice and fired it past Ossachuk to give the Lumberjacks the 4-3 win.
The Jimmies three-game losing streak is a self-fulfilling prophecy according to Berggren.
“I think our biggest problem right now is we are so afraid of losing that we end up losing. We bring it on ourselves. We attract what we fear. I think we need to play with a little bit more poise. We need to realize, we lost, that’s the worst thing that is going to happen,” Berggren said. “We need to just keep playing hard and not be so worried.”
These two teams have an immediate rematch at 7 p.m. on Oct 23 at Wilson Arena.
