JAMESTOWN, N.D. – In a tightly contested game at John L. Wilson Arena, the third-ranked Minot State University Beavers defeated the No. 6 University of Jamestown Jimmies 3-2 on Friday night. A third-period goal by Colby Joseph proved to be the game-winner in a matchup that saw the lead change hands in the second period.
After a scoreless first period where both teams registered a handful of shots, the action picked up in the second. Jamestown struck first when Carson Brown scored at the 4:43 mark, with assists from Brad Fortin and Ray Warrack. Minot State responded less than a minute later, as Walker Jerome tied the game at 5:30. The Beavers took a 2-1 lead late in the period on a power-play goal from Joey Moffatt with just under a minute remaining.
In the third period, Minot State extended its lead to 3-1 at 8:11 on what would hold up as the game-winning goal from Joseph. The Jimmies answered quickly, with Cai Robinson scoring at 9:14, assisted by Jordan Baranesky and Warrack, to bring Jamestown back within one. Despite pulling their goalie in the final minutes, the Jimmies were unable to find the equalizing goal.
The game was evenly matched, with Minot State holding a narrow 27-26 advantage in shots on goal. The key difference came on the power play, where the Beavers converted on one of their four opportunities, while the Jimmies were unable to score on their three chances with the man advantage.
Minot State’s goalie, Will Dyke, earned the win with 24 saves. Jamestown’s Brandon Weare took the loss, making 24 saves on 27 shots. The two teams meet again Saturday evening in MInot with puck drop set for 7 p.m.
