The University of Jamestown D2 hockey team was victorious in its season debut Friday night, defeating St. Cloud State 7-4 at Wilson Arena.
The win was the first for the Jimmies as members of the Western Collegiate Club Hockey Association (WCCHA).
Gunnar Gibbs (SR/Grand Forks, N.D.) netted a pair of goals and an assist, Josh Hoffman (JR/McMurray, Pa.) scored a goal and assisted on two others, and Justin King (JR/Markham, Ontario) and Zane MacDonald (SR/Minnedosa, Manitoba) each had a goal and assist for UJ.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 6:55 mark of the first, but Braxton Neas (SR/Bismarck, N.D.) tied the game for Jamestown with assists from Gibbs and Jensen Baehr (JR/Boulder, Colo.) at 12:55.
In the second period, St. Cloud State retook the lead on Colin Steinberg’s goal at 2:29. Gibbs notched his first of the game at 5:08 on assists from Connor Rollo (SR/Camarillo, Calif.) and Hoffman. The goal started a streak of four straight goals by the Jimmies, as MacDonald (6:48), Gibbs (13:15), and Hoffman (18:07) all lit the lamp to make it 5-2 going into the third period.
SCSU made it a two-goal game just 23 seconds into the final frame, but Christian Jarmusz (JR/Eden, N.Y.) pushed the lead back to three at the 4:04 mark. The Huskies scored their lone power play goal of the night at 5:28, and Jamestown rounded out the goal fest with a power play tally of their own from King at 12:14.
Josh Moe (JR/Mandan, N.D.), Lukas Brockman (JR/Elk River, Minn.), Matthew Poole (FR/Edmonton, Alberta), and Josh Bishop (FR/Kamloops, British Columbia) also recorded assists for UJ. Samuel Potter (SR) stopped 18 of the 22 shots he faced in goal. Jamestown outshot the Huskies 60-22, including 42-15 over the final forty minutes.
