GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin improved to 5-0-1 on the season with a 5-0 victory over defending GLCHL champion Grand Valley State Saturday night at Eagles Ice Center.

Freshman Keith Schenkel put Calvin on the board midway through the first half to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Freshman Steven Ickes gave Calvin a 2-0 lead three minutes later.

The Calvin scoring surge continued a minute later with sophomore Joshua Ernst banging in a shot to put the Knights up 3-0.

Fresh off earning All-MIAA honors in golf during the afternoon, senior Jacob Siebenga put his mark on the ice in the second period, whipping in a shot to give Calvin a 4-0 advantage.

Grand Valley State went on the power play late in the third period but was unable to score as Schenkel stole a pass, sped through the defense and crammed home a shot for his second goal of the game and a convincing 5-0 Calvin lead.

Grand Valley outshot Calvin 37-31 but freshman goalie Carlos Siso was superb in between the pipes, making 37 saves in gaining the shutout win.

COACHES COMMENT: “We beat a good Grand Valley State team tonight with a tremendous compete level,” said Calvin head coach Mike Petrusma. “Outstanding goaltending and an overall tenacious team effort were the keys for us in this game.”
