BENSENVILLE, Ill. – The Roosevelt University ACHA Division I men’s hockey team split a weekend series versus Western Michigan University, losing 5-2 on Friday, October 22 and winning 2-1 in overtime on Saturday, October 23 to record the first victory in program history.  The Lakers now own a 1-5 record this season.

In the series opener on Friday night, the Lakers jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 11:29 mark on a Josef Martancik goal with assists going to Tim Laskowski and Griffin Lehet.  The Broncos answered with the tying goal at 16:13 and the game remained even at 1-1 at the end of the first period.

Halfway through the second period, Western Michigan scored a short-handed goal to take a 2-1 lead, but six minutes later Roosevelt tied the game up on a goal by Jake Hermann on a Gage McNeish assist.  However, the Broncos took the lead for good just 18 seconds later and led 3-2 heading into the second intermission, adding two goals in the third period for the 5-2 win.

On Saturday night, the first period was a scoreless and even affair with the Lakers holding a slight 18-17 shots on goal advantage.  Western Michigan struck first in the second period at the 4:41 mark and held that lead heading into the final period.

The Lakers went on the offensive in the third, holding more than a double shots on goal advantage and were rewarded at 15:18 when Griffin Lehet tallied his first collegiate goal on an assist from Josef Martancik to tie the game at 1-1.  Neither team could find the back of the net during the rest of the period, sending the game to overtime.

Both teams only recorded two shots on goal each in the extra period of hockey, but it was Cade Swygert’s shot at the 1:48 mark that beat the Broncos goaltender for the first victory in the program’s history.  The goal was Swygert’s second of the season with Tanner Hallett earning the assist.
