M3 Hope Earns Sweep in Rematch with Michigan

Senior forward Kevin Healy delivered in a big way for the second-ranked Hope College ice hockey team.

On Saturday, Healy (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford HS) scored twice in a span of six minutes, 18 seconds during the third period to lift the Flying Dutchmen to 4-2 home victory against the University of Michigan on Saturday.

On Friday, Healy assisted on Lucas Barber’s game-winning goal in a 3-2 road victory vs. Michigan in Canton.

Hope, the ACHA’s second-ranked team, improved their record to 15-1 with the two-game sweep. The series was a rematch of last season’s ACHA national championship game.

Healy leads the Flying Dutchmen in scoring this season with 29 points on a team-leading 16 goals and 13 assists.

At Griff’s IceHouse West, Healy evened the score with the Wolverines at 2-2 at the 8:50 mark of the third period.

With just over five minutes remaining in regulation. Healy struck out again with the go-ahead goal. Senior center Gabe Gunneson (Rockford, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern sealed the win three minutes later with his 14th goal of the season.

Sophomore goalie Maclane Schick (Kohler, Wisconsin / Kohler) made 34 saves for Hope.

Healy teamed with senior center Noah Christensen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) to help set up Barber (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) for a crucial third goal early in the third period.

Barber’s 11th goal of the game provided a two-goal lead that proved critical as Michigan scored during the final minute of play.

Schick recorded 27 saves for the Flying Dutchmen.

Hope plays its final game of the calendar year on Friday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m. against Rowan University (N.J.) at Griff’s IceHouse West.
