Mavericks Drop Two Tough Ones at Air Force

From Colorado Mesa Athletics

The Colorado Mesa Hockey team dropped two games at Air Force over the weekend.

On Friday, the Mavs battled hard against the top-ranked team in the nation, trading goals back and forth with Air Force. With 2 minutes left in the game, the score was tied 3-3.   Air Force capitalized on a Mavericks turnover to score the game winning goal with 1:20 left, taking the game 4-3.

CMU goalie Chris McElroy was a wall in the net making 47 saves, including numerous highlight reel stops, while Collin Fitzgerlad, Alex Alexiev, and Eli Wilson scored for the Mavs.

“This was by far our best game of the year, against the top ranked team, proving that we can play and beat any team in the nation,” said head coach Tim Winegard. “It was a back-and-forth game and came down to an unlucky goal in the final minute of the game. That happens and is the nature of hockey sometimes.  But the boys should be very proud of their effort. They played their hearts out.”

After their stellar game on Friday night, the game on Saturday morning was a different tale.  The Mavericks looked tired and seemingly could never find their game and get on track.

After scoring the first goal of the game, a tally by Mason Ripley, the Mavs gave up 9 goals throughout the rest of the game losing 9-1.

The Mavs have some well-deserved time off after numerous back-to-back road trips. They return home against New Mexico on November 4th and 5th.
