It’s been 15 periods since the top-ranked Hope College men’s hockey team gave up a goal.
The Flying Dutchmen extended their defensive dominance over the weekend, blanking Ferris State University, 7-0 and 9-0, in American Collegiate Hockey Association play.
Hope (23-2-1 overall) last allowed a goal in the third period of a 16-1 victory vs. Davenport University on Jan. 10. The Flying Dutchmen shut out Davenport on Jan. 11, Saginaw Valley State University’s ACHA Division 1 team on Jan. 17 and 18, and Ferris State.
The sweep extended Hope’s winning streak to eight games and its unbeaten streak to 15.
On Saturday, freshman goalie Sebastian Wigfield (Blue Hill, Maine / Saint Ignatius College Prep) stopped all six shots he faced during a 9-0 victory at Cedar Rock Ice Arena in Cedar Springs.
Senior defenseman Nolan Holtrop (Walker, Michigan / Kenowa Hills) recorded a hat trick as well as one assist.
Junior center Jake Onstott (Zeeland, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) contributed five assists and one goal.
On Friday, the Flying Dutchmen received 13 goals from senior goalie Maclane Schick (Kohler, Wisconsin / Kohler) and goals from seven different skaters for a 7-0 victory at Griff’s IceHouse West.
Onstott opened the scoring 20 seconds into the game en route to finishing with one goal and three assists.
Freshman right wing Brady Kingsbury (Saginaw, Michigan / Michigan International Prep) and sophomore center Jake Nanna (Muskegon, Michigan / Mona Shores) capped a three-goal first period.
This weekend’s victories improved Hope’s Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference West Division record to 9-0-1 with two games remaining. The Flying Dutchmen skate against second-place Grand Valley State University on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 31-Feb. 1. GVSU is 7-1 in division play with four games remaining.
Hope hosts Friday’s 7:30 p.m. series opener at Griff’s IceHouse West. Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. series finale is at Griff’s Georgetown Ice Arena.
