No. 12 Jimmies Notch Win In First-Ever Conference Game

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.– Brad Fortin (FR/Langley, British Columbia), Kole Christensson (FR/Calgary, Alberta), and Mario DeCapite (SO/Calgary, Alberta) each had two goals Friday evening as the 12th-ranked University of Jamestown ACHA D1 hockey team won its Midwest College Hockey conference debut 7-4 over Illinois State University.

The teams traded goals in the first period, with the Redbirds scoring at the 7:33 mark of the opening period. Christensson had goals at 13:27 and 16:31 to head into the first intermission tied 2-2.

Once again ISU and UJ alternated goals in the second. Fortin’s power play goal at 8:32 tied the game at 3-3, then DeCapite scored again at the 12:39 mark to make it a 4-4 game. Fortin added his second with 57 seconds left in the period to give Jamestown a 5-4 lead entering the final twenty minutes.

Gage Thompson (SR/Valley City, N.D.) made it a two-goal lead for the Jimmies at 9:38, then DeCapite rounded out the scoring with an empty-net goal at 19:26.

Carter Johnson (SR/Meeteetse, Wyo.) and Jordan Baranesky (FR/Red Lake, Ontario) both had a pair of assists, and single helpers went to Fortin, Brenden Vulcano (SO/Nelson, British Columbia), Justin Dumont (JR/Atlanta, Ga.), Andrew Clark (JR/Spokane, Wash.), and Greg Susinski (JR/Calgary, Alberta).

Shots were 51-31 in favor of Jamestown. Matthew Trulsen (SR/New Westminster, British Columbia) made 15 saves and Brandon Weare (FR/Calgary, Alberta) had 12 stops.
