No. 6 Jimmies score season-high 7 goals in win over NC State

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The University of Jamestown men’s hockey team used a dominant second period and a relentless offensive attack to secure a 7-2 victory over North Carolina State University on Monday afternoon at Wilson Arena.

The Jimmies (14-8-0) overwhelmed the Wolfpack, outshooting them 47-13 over three periods of play. Darius Makse led the charge with two goals, including the game-winner and a short-handed tally.

The Icepack struck first at the 7:03 mark of the opening period when Joey Gouveia found the back of the net off an assist from Gian Khani. Jamestown responded late in the frame as Carson Brown scored his 10th goal of the season at 16:51, assisted by Ray Warrack, to send the game into the first intermission tied 1-1.

UJ took control in the second period, outshooting NC State 17-4. Despite being on the penalty kill, Makse scored a short-handed goal at 4:53, assisted by Brad Fortin, to give the Jimmies their first lead. Just over three minutes later, Makse struck again for his fourth of the season, assisted by Malachi Franklin and Kaelan Shelton, to extend the lead to 3-1.

Warrack added an insurance goal at 10:36, assisted by Brown and Griffin Bourassa, capping a three-goal period for the Jimmies.

Jamestown’s power play went to work in the third period. Fortin notched his 13th goal of the year at 4:00 on the man advantage. Two minutes later, Jordan Baranesky added another power-play goal to push the lead to 6-1. Matthew McIntyre rounded out the UJ scoring at 7:13, with an assist from Tanner McCracken.

NC State’s Jack Ammons added a late short-handed goal at 12:04, but the Icepack could not close the gap against a stout Jimmie defense.

Brandon Weare earned the win for Jamestown, making 11 saves on 13 shots. NC State’s Ethan Roberts faced a barrage of 47 shots, finishing with 40 saves in the loss.

UJ finished 2-for-7 on the power play while successfully killing both NC State man advantages.

Next up for the Jimmies is a weekend series at Midland University beginning on Friday at 7 p.m.
