SHU M2 Closes Regular Season With 2 More Conference Wins

 

SHU M2 closed out the regular season, winning both SECHL matchups this weekend, but dropping the contest with out of conference RPI.

The Pioneers opened the weekend recognizing their 2023 seniors, forwards Justin Bernhard, Drew Galea, Zacharia Ouladelhadjahmed, defensemen Mark Garfinkel, Max Mele, and goaltender Matt Ubertaccio. SHU opened scoring early, when freshman Nick Milmore scored his first goal as a Pioneer in the second minute. Bernhard and junior Nick Chiurazzi added 2 more for SHU in the first. Sophomore Christos Caminis netted his 20th goal of the season and Ouladelhadjahmed scored shorthanded to close the second. Both teams were kept scoreless in the third to secure the conference win. Ubertaccio celebrated his senior night with the shutout in his final home game as a Pioneer.

Saturday, the team took on rival RPI. SHU went down by 2 early, before coming back with goals from Caminis, Galea, and freshman James O’Toole. RPI opened the scoring in the second, but SHU was pulled ahead again in the 13th minute. The back and forth continued, when RPI tied it up less than 2 minutes later. The Engineers took the lead with a powerplay goal and added one more to ice the win.

SHU bounced back in a big way on Sunday to finish off the regular season, defeating CCSU 14-2. The Pioneers got contributions from all over the roster, including first Pioneer goals from freshman Benedetto Galluzzo and sophomore John Gower. Junior Troy Clement picked up his second and third goals of the season and Mele netted his first of the season in his last home game as a Pioneer. SHU was able to record 76 shots on goal in the win.

SHU finishes the regular season 15-6, including 10-2 in conference play. They enter this weekend’s SECHL championship tournament as the #2 seed. This secures them a first round bye, and they open play on Saturday in the semifinals at 9:15pm at the MidHudson Civic Center against the highest remaining seed.
