W1 Announces National Player of the Year

Troy, MI — [March 14, 2023] The American Collegiate Hockey Association announced today the 2022-2023 recipient of the Women’s Division One Zoe Harris Award is Hannah Stone from Midland University. The Zoe Harris Award, which recognizes the ACHA’s regular season player of the year, is the top individual award a player can receive. The Zoe Harris award is decided on by the competition committee, which is made up of 5 coaches in the division. The six players on the first all-athletic team are eligible for the award.

 

Stone is a senior at Midland University, majoring in criminal justice. Stone played her first two seasons in the ACHA at Lindenwood-Belleville. She transferred to Midland University for the 2020-2021 season, where she is now the starting goalie for the Warriors. She has played in 23 games this season with a record of 17-2-0-0-4. She has 26 goals against with a 1.12 goals against average, and 0.947 save percentage.

We asked Midland University Head Coach, Jason White, why Stone deserves this award. “I am so happy for Hannah being nominated as the Zoe Harris winner. She has helped elevate our program to national recognition at the ACHA W1 level and always gives our team an opportunity to win hockey games. This is the first time in our program history to have a player be recognized for this award and I am beyond proud that Hannah is the recipient.”

“Hannah Stone is a very exceptional goalie. She puts everything she has into the game and is able to contribute to the team. Hannah has a passion for the game that is hard to find in players. Her passion drives her to be better and that shows on the ice. She deserves this honor of being player of the year and we as a team are very proud of her for her hard work and her dedication,” Midland Co-Captain, Maggie Marcotte.

Midland Co-Captain, Kamryn Hayhurst, “Hannah has been a huge part of our team since she first came to Midland. As a player, she is exactly the type of goalie you want in your net. She is always reliable which allows us to play in front of her! This season especially, she has stepped up in big games and stolen some games for us. She is very deserving of this award and I’m so glad that her hard work is being recognized!”

The Zoe Harris Award is named in honor of Zoe Harris, who was instrumental in pioneering the birth of the Women’s Division in the year 2000. She served as Co-Vice President of the division and worked tirelessly recruiting the first women’s teams into the division. She established a set of rules and regulations for the new division that were eventually incorporated into the ACHA Policies and Procedures Manual. Zoe was also instrumental in the appointment of the first women’s commissioner. All of these efforts were accomplished as Zoe was coaching the ACHA Men’s Division II team at the University of Washington.
