Warriors Sweep No. 2-Ranked Bulldogs

From Indiana Tech Athletics

ADRIAN, Mich./FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 7-ranked Indiana Tech women’s ice hockey team took down one of the top hockey programs in the ACHA twice this weekend, by scores of 4-3 and 2-0.

Just last weekend, the Warriors suffered a crushing home-ice defeat, a game in which they carried a 3-1 lead going into the final period, and then lost 6-4. Saying that Scott Hicks’ crew responded well would be an understatement.

Indiana Tech didn’t get any time to look back on their blunder, as they had dates with the No. 2-ranked Adrian College Bulldogs, who made the ACHA Frozen Four a season ago, what most would call a daunting task for a first-year program.

On Friday night, it was the Warriors who slapped the Bulldogs in the mouth to start things off as Megan Yakiwchuk scored not one, but two goals in the first period, both assisted by Dakota Bowler, to carry a 2-0 lead into the intermission. Halfway through the second period, Adrian would respond, but Yakiwchuk would answer right back, netting a hat-trick through two periods. Tech woud go up 3-1 heading into the final period. This is where things got sticky, as the Warriors would be penalized four times to the Bulldogs’ zero, allowing Adrian to tie the game and send it to Overtime. Tech had command of the game, and yet again watched their lead slip away in the third period. But this was Overtime, all-even, nothing else matters. 1:34 into the first OT, an Adrian defender fell down, leaving Izzy Pettem-Shand one-on-one with the goaltender, she faked the backhand and buried the wrister, giving the Warriors their first Top-5 win in program history.

On Saturday night, Indiana Tech proved that their victory the night before wasn’t a fluke, as Izzy Varner shut out the Bulldogs, and Pettem-Shand would score twice. Indiana Tech swept Adrian, and the Warriors have earned their Holiday Break.

Tech improved to 12-4-1 on the weekend, and if you want to see one of the top ACHA W1 squads in the country, you can do that by being at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse on Friday, January 7th, at 8:30 PM, as the Warriors have a matchup with Grand Valley State (5-4-1).
