JAMESTOWN, N.D. – In a thrilling Sunday morning contest at John L. Wilson Arena, the No. 11 University of Jamestown ACHA Division 1 women’s hockey team erased a two-goal deficit to defeat top-ranked Liberty University 4-3 in overtime.
Emma Durand was the hero for the Jimmies, netting the game-winning goal just 57 seconds into the extra session to cap a resilient comeback. The victory came on the back of a busy performance by goaltender Maddie Sylvestre, who stopped 30 of 33 shots to earn the win.
The Flames controlled the opening period, jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Brielle Fussy opened the scoring at the 9:02 mark, tallying her 12th goal of the season with assists from Brookelyn Beauchamp and Julianne Lefaive.
Late in the first, Liberty doubled their advantage. Tristan Craig found the back of the net at 18:25, set up by Brooklyn Voortman and Allison Shaw, sending the visitors into the first intermission with all the momentum.
The second period proved to be a wild affair defined by special teams play. Jamestown cut the lead to 2-1 with a shorthanded goal from Bekah Nickisch at 7:18, assisted by Maddison Andrew.
However, Liberty responded just 24 seconds later on the same power play. Allison Shaw restored the two-goal cushion at 3-1 with her fifth of the season, assisted by Elisabeth Sarauer.
Refusing to go away, the Jimmies struck back on a power play of their own. Gaby Schroder narrowed the gap to 3-2 at 11:36, converting on assists from Mikaela Nimetz and Durand.
UJ’s persistence paid off late in the third period. With time winding down, defenseman Samantha Beaulac scored an unassisted goal at 15:41—her third of the year—to knot the game at 3-3 and force overtime.
In the sudden-death period, Liberty made a goaltending change, bringing in Alexandra Keith. However, Jamestown wasted little time testing the new netminder. Durand fired home the unassisted game-winner at 0:57, sending the Jimmies faithful home happy.
Jamestown is back in action on Friday, December 5, beginning a weekend series at University of Minnesota.
