Sophomore defenseman Chris Tamer scored 2:20 into overtime to give the Army West Point Club Hockey team a 3-2 overtime triumph over Sacred Heart and its third consecutive Super East Collegiate Hockey League (SECHL) playoff championship on Feb. 11 in Little Falls, New Jersey. The victory completed a 2-0 weekend that began with a 7-1 rout of tournament host Montclair State on Feb. 10.

The Black Knights (19-4-2), who overcame a frightening injury to senior defenseman Magnus Sheridan late in the second period of the championship game, now head to Keene, New Hampshire, for the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division II Northeast Regional from Feb. 23-25. Army West Point will get a first-round bye and open Feb. 24 in its quest to advance to next month’s ACHA nationals in St. Louis.

Sheridan is presumably questionable for regionals after being transferred to a local Little Falls hospital by ambulance. Immediate concerns about his condition were quickly soothed and he was discharged from the hospital and returned to West Point. After the game, Army West Point Head Coach Erik Batewell said, “The resiliency the team showed on Sunday night after such a scary moment is something I will forever be in awe of.”

Junior Caleb Kaiser, who was named SECHL player of the year and first-team forward before the tournament, assisted on Tamer’s goal for his second point of the game and fourth of the weekend. Senior winger Mark Lehman and sophomore defenseman Bobby Staring also had big tournaments. Lehman had three consecutive goals for a natural hat trick against Montclair State and scored against Sacred Heart. Staring, who was named to the all-SECHL second team, had a goal in each game.

Plebe goalie Liam Monahan, who was named to the all-SECHL second team and all-rookie team, stopped 15-of-17 shots against Sacred Heart and 12-of-13 shots against Montclair State. Plebe defenseman Brendan Connor, who had two assists against Montclair State, joined Monahan on the SECHL all-rookie team.
