Braun’s hat trick helps Jimmies beat Lake Superior State

Annika Braun posted her first career hat trick as the 11th-ranked University of Jamestown women’s hockey team remained unbeaten at home with a 5-3 victory over Lake Superior State University Sunday afternoon.

Records: Jamestown 4-1-0, Lake Superior State 0-6-1

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Playing their third game in three days, Lake Superior State led 2-1 after the first period.

Brooke Brazeau got the game’s opening goal for the Lakers, scoring just 80 seconds into the contest with assists from Lindsey Tonello and Kallen Micolo.

Kelsey Amick tied the game for UJ with her second of the season, coming at the 7:00 mark on an assist by Madison Knudson.

With ten seconds left in the period, the Lakers retook the lead on a power play goal by Madison Pott, assisted by Haley Howe and Heather Lamb.

Braun potted the first two Jimmie goals of the second period, with the first coming at 5:02. Mackenzie Couling and Kiran Vugteveen assisted on the goal, Braun’s second of the year.

At 8:17, Braun made it 3-2 in favor of Jamestown, with Vugteveen and Couling also assisting.

Anne Hulst netted UJ’s lone power play goal of the contest at the 13:00 mark to make it 4-2 Jimmies. Braun and Crystal Wale each picked up an assist.

Braun completed the hat trick at 6:51 of the third period on an assist by Couling, and Jamestown opened up a three-goal lead.

Brazeau scored for the Lakers on the power play at 15:21 to cut UJ’s lead to two.

 

FOR THE JIMMIES

Lilah Drew stopped 30 shots in goal to earn the win.

Couling tied a career high with three assists, the second time in her last three games she has recorded three helpers.

Jamestown finished 1-for-3 on the power play.

The Jimmies play Thursday and Friday at the University of Minnesota.
