Falcons Split Series with Thunder in Overtime

ANGOLA, Ind. – The CUW ACHA team finished up its weekend series with the sixth-ranked Thunder on Saturday evening.

The Falcons scored first with a pair of goals in the first period. Senior Sam Weiss (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) netted the first Falcon goal on a power play opportunity with assists from junior Ian Malcolmson (Waukesha, Wis.) and senior Alex Way (Ottawa, Ont.). Junior John Swiatek (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded the second Falcon goal of the period with assists from seniors Scott Gregor (Ashland, Wis.) and Thomas Dyball (Papillion, Neb.).

The Thunder netted their first goal of the matchup with two minutes remaining in the first period.

The teams headed into the first intermission with a 2-1 Falcon advantage.

Trine tied the matchup with a goal in the ninth minute.

The Falcons took back the lead on a power play opportunity off the stick of Alex Way. Way was assisted by Malcolmson and senior Jacob Palmerio (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.).

The teams traded goals to open the third period with the Thunder scoring first but the Falcons answered just over a minute later. Weiss netted the fourth Falcon goal to take the 4-3 lead off assists from Way and senior Lucas Kreuser (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) for their third powerplay goal.

The Falcons eyed the sweep, but the Thunder slid one past senior Mack Willy (Tacoma, Wash.) to send the matchup into overtime where they eventually netted their fifth goal to claim the contest.

Willy finished with 28 saves in his 62:02 in the net.

The Blue and White head home and will take on Illinois State on Friday and Saturday in a weekend series inside the Ozaukee Ice Center.
