Four goal game for Katherine Willey propels Penn State to a 5-3 win over Rhode Island

 

TROY, Mich. – (October 9, 2023) – Penn State entered the second game of the weekend series with a 3-2 win in regulation under their belt.

Rhode Island would strike first. Just 5:16 into the first period with an unassisted goal from Grace Gibbons (Soph.) to give the Rams a 1-0 early lead. The Lady Lions would score a power play goal just a few minutes later to tie the game 1-1. The goal was scored by Freshman, Katherine Willey with the assist from Camryn Salaski (Jr.). Halfway through the period, Deirdre Murphy would score an additional power play goal for the Lady Lions to hold a 2-1 lead going into the first intermission.

 

The only goal scored in the second period was scored at 5:36 of the second period. The Rams second goal was scored unassisted by G. Gibbons, her second of the night. The Rams and Lady Lions would go into the second intermission tied 2-2.

 

In the third period, the Lady Lions dominated in the scoring column. They scored at 3:30 of the third period. The goal was scored by K. Willey, her second of the night. The goal was assisted by Ashley Chiango, and C. Salaski. At 6:49 of the third period, K. Willey would strike again, her third of the game, with assists by Kaitlyn Bahrs, and C. Salaski. At 11:54 of the third period, K. Willey would score her fourth goal, and the final Lady Lions goal of the game. At 16:52 of the third period, G. Gibbons would score a hat trick goal and the final Rams goal of the game.

 

“It was a great team win and a good weekend sweep. There was so much energy on the bench and support from teammates that made it easy to put in the work,” said Katherine WIlley.

 

In net for the home team was Jessica Ware who made twenty-nine (29) saves over the course of the three periods. In net for the visiting team was Amelia Lambert who made fifty-two (52) saves over the course of the game.

 

The Rams had four penalties for a total of eight (8) minutes. The Lady Lions capitalized on two of those four penalties. The Lady Lions had two penalties for a total of four minutes.

 

The Rams next game will host Midland University on Thursday, October 12th. The Lady Lions next games will be on the road October 20th at University of Michigan-Dearborn.
