Hope Rallies to Sweep Michigan State

The Hope College ice hockey team capped a weekend sweep of Michigan State University with a come-from behind, 2-1 victory on Saturday.

The Flying Dutch struck for two goals over the final 6 minutes, 17 seconds on the road.

Junior defenseman Luke McKinch (Plymouth, Wisconsin / Plymouth Comprehensive) recorded the game winner with 34 seconds remaining in the third period.

Senior forward Kevin Healy (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) tied the score at 1-1 by scoring at the 13:43 mark of the third period off an assist from senior left wing Lucas Barber (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion).

Junior goalie Ryan McClelland (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central) made 21 saves against the Spartans.

On Friday, the Flying Dutchmen won, 5-1, on home ice at Griff’s IceHouse West behind a four-goal second period.

Helay recorded both of his goals during the second period, including the game-winner on the power play at the 10:06 mark.

Sophomore goalie Maclane Schick (Kohler, Wisconsin / Kohler) made 20 saves.

Hope is now 11-1 on the season.

The Flying Dutchmen’s next series is against Calvin University. On Friday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m., Hope will host the Knights at Griff’s IceHouse West and raise their 2021-22 ACHA national championship banner prior to the game.

On Saturday, Nov. 19, Hope will skate against Calvin at 8 p.m.
