The 23rd-ranked Hope College men’s hockey team swept Saginaw Valley State University this weekend, winning 5-3 on Friday at Griff’s IceHouse West and 8-3 on Saturday at Bay County Ice Arena in Saginaw.
The Flying Dutchmen raised their American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 1 record to 7-1.
On Friday, freshman center Logan Nickolaus (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center / Wisconsin Windigo NAHL) snapped a 1-1 tie by scoring the first of his two goals with 4:37 remaining in the first period.
Nickolaus finished the game with two goals and two assists.
Senior defenseman Austin Ieuter (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow / Metro Jets USPHL Premier) and freshman center Connor Dvorak (Freeland, Michigan / Wausau Cyclones NA3HL) chipped in three assists apiece.
Sophomore goalie Sebastian Wigfield (Blue Hill, Maine / Saint Ignatius Prep / Battle Creek Kernels USPHL Premier) stopped 23 shots. Hope outshot SVSU 45-26.
On Saturday, senior center Jake Onstott (Zeeland, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central / Shreveport Mudbugs NAHL) staked the Flying Dutchmen to a 3-0 lead by scoring twice.
Freshman right wing Gerdas Paulauskas (Lisle, Illinois / Acellus Academy / Toledo Cherokee USPHL Premier) recorded one goal and three assists.
Wigfield made 14 saves over two periods.
Hope’s next series is the GL6 opener against Roosevelt University (Illinois). The Flying Dutchmen host the first game on Friday, Oct. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at Griff’s IceHouse West, then play at Roosevelt on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 8:30 p.m. at Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, Illinois.
