No. 5 Hope Splits Showdown with Top-Ranked GVSU

The fifth-ranked Hope College ice hockey team split a weekend ACHA showdown series with top-ranked Grand Valley State University.

On Friday, the Flying Dutchmen skated to a 1-0 overtime victory against the Lakers on home ice at Griff’s Icehouse West.

On Saturday, Hope lost 2-1 to GVSU at Griff’s Georgetown Ice Arena.

The Flying Dutchmen are now 17-5 overall and 7-3 in the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference standings.

On Friday, junior defenseman Nolan Holtrop (Walker, Michigan / Kenowa Hills HS) scored the winning goal 3 minutes, 26 seconds into overtime. Sophomore defenseman Austin Ieuter (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) had the assist.

Junior goalie Maclane Schick (Kohler, Wisconsin / Kohler) made 21 saves. The Flying Dutchmen outshot GVSU by a 40-21 margin.

On Saturday, senior center Gabe Gunneson (Rockford, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) scored for the Lakers off assists from senior defenseman Luke McKinch (Plymouth, Wisconsin / Plymouth Comprehensive) and Holtrop.

Schick stopped 20 shots.

Hope’s next series is Friday-Saturday, Feb. 2-3, against Ferris State University.

Friday’s game at Griff’s IceHouse West starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday’s game at Cedar Rock Sports Complex in Cedar Springs begins at 7:30 p.m.
