CHESTERFIELD – Maryville University M1 hockey split a two-game set with third-ranked Ohio University over the weekend. On Saturday, the Saints snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Bobcats to improve their record to 5-4 in 2023.

Ohio struck early on Friday evening, netting a pair of goals from Will Cohen and Luc Reeve in the first period. The Saints responded in the second period with 11 shots but were kept off the board. A powerplay goal in the third sealed up a 3-0 win for the Bobcats. Ed Coffey got the start in net and made 28 of 31 saves.

Maryville responded immediately on Saturday with Campbell Mclean’s first goal of the season at 5:50 in the opening period. Sam Edwards doubled the lead when Jaxon White and Brett Ursulak found him for his seventh goal of the year to make it 2-0 before Ohio responded with a goal with three seconds left in the second period. Clinging to a one-goal lead, Coffey was up to the task in net, stopping 24 of 25 shots before Jaxon White’s empty-net goal put the game out of reach.

The season continues for the Saints on Friday, Oct. 20, on the road against fourth-ranked Liberty University. The puck drop on both Friday and Saturday is set for 7 p.m., in Lynchburg, Va.
