MINOT — It has been a busy month for former Fargo Davies hockey star Jay Buchholz. He won an ACHA National Championship with Minot State on March 21 and next week he’ll hit the road for Romania to represent the United States on the ice.

“No matter what level, getting the opportunity to represent your country is a pretty unbelievable honor and it was a pretty easy decision to say yeah,” Buchholz said.

On April 14, Buchholz will hit the ice at the World Cup of University Hockey. The event features two teams from the ACHA: a U.S. team and a Canadian team. They will face off against teams from six European countries made up of players from the European University Hockey Association.

“I don’t know how many people get the opportunity to play hockey overseas, so I think down the road I’ll definitely be remembering this and sharing it,” Buchholz said.

Buchholz says he doesn’t think it will all sink in until puck drop.

“Winning a national championship a few weeks ago and taking it easy after the season and right away I’m flying over three weeks later to Europe,” Buchholz said.

For Buchholz it’s another chance to help a growing Minot State hockey program continue to rise.

“Everybody wants to make that step up to be a (NCAA) Division I team,” Buchholz said. “While I’m here it’s probably not going to happen, but if it’s a chance for down the road this team gets a chance to go Division I for hockey it’s an amazing step.”

Buchholz and the Beavers will face former NCAA DI champion Denver in December.
