With a win Monday night in the annual Governor’s Cup contest, the Tar Heels club ice hockey team is riding a two-game win streak at PNC Arena. The Heels beat NC State’s Icepack 5-3.

More than 6,000 fans – representatives of both schools – filled PNC Arena’s lower bowl and kept it loud.

The Tar Heels’ Tommy Gilligan scored first, but the Icepack did not take too long to answer back with a sniper from Joey Gouveia.

With a couple of power plays in UNC’s favor, the Icepack found themselves playing a lot of defense and keeping the puck out of their own zone.

It was a game of tit for tat with both teams answering as soon as the other one found the net. However, UNC began to pull away late in the third with a straight shot from Patrick O’Shaughnessy.

An empty netter would seal the deal for UNC to take the win for the second year in a row at PNC, a victory especially sweet for UNC seniors like defenseman Wills Kendrick-Holmes.

“I think its grit and a lot of luck too. Sometimes, that is just how [the sport] of hockey goes” said UNC defenseman Wills Kendrick-Holmes.

Second win for UNC is first for new coach

Head coach Adam Dauda joined the Tar Heels in May to help build up the UNC club hockey team. It seems like he has done just that, securing his first ever Governor’s Cup win during his first year as a head coach.

“I think the atmosphere was awesome tonight. We had a great turnout with the fans and I am super happy for the guys. They have been working hard all first semester so its great to finish off on that great note,” said head coach Adam Dauda
