FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University opened its women’s hockey season this weekend with a two-game home series against the University of Jamestown. The Warriors swept the Jimmies inside Sidner Ice Arena, winning 6-0 on Thursday and 5-1 on Friday.

THURSDAY: Midland 6, Jamestown 0

In the first of nine scheduled meetings this season, Midland showed consistency with two goals in each period on Thursday afternoon. It took a little time to get going as Callie Maguire scored the first goal of the season near the midway point of the first. After a roughing call against the Jimmies, Maguire found the back of the net at the 8:03 mark off assists from Kiara McGregor and Katie McNair.

Just over nine minutes later, Jaicee Huberdeau found an opening to put the Warriors up 2-0. Makenna Larson and Jordan Bell earned assists on the play just before the first intermission. Midland held a commanding 18-5 shot advantage through the first 20 minutes of action.

Coming out of the break, the Warriors added two goals in the first half of the second period. First, Maguire struck again off a feed from Grace Page and Taylor Bell at the 6:15 mark. Then, McGregor netted her first collegiate goal at 9:46, with fellow rookies Victoria Campbell and Jadis Howden assisting to make it a 4-0 game.

Ashlyn Kuffler added her name to the scoresheet in the third, scoring her first collegiate goal off an assist from Davanna Ditto in the opening five minutes. With 7:01 left in the game, Darbi Poole tacked on the final score of the day off a pass from T. Bell and Page.

Defensively, Midland limited Jamestown to just 13 shots on goal, with Meghan Stewart collecting the shutout win in net with 13 saves. The Warriors scored six goals on 53 shots and went 1-for-6 on the power play. Jamestown had just one power-play chance as Midland was whistled for a single penalty.

FRIDAY: Midland 5, Jamestown 1

Things started slowly in the opening period, less than 24 hours after the season opener for both teams. Midland broke through late in the first as Campbell scored her first career goal with just over one minute remaining. Maguire and McGregor assisted to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead heading into intermission.

In the second, Jamestown equalized with a power-play goal at the 1:07 mark. Midland responded just over a minute later with a power-play goal of its own. Following a tripping call, McNair scored to put the Warriors back on top as Maguire and McGregor picked up two more assists. Through 40 minutes, Midland held a slim 2-1 lead.

The Warriors looked sharper in the final period, and their aggressive play led to three more goals. At 3:27, Maguire scored her third goal of the weekend off a feed from Jaden Greenlee. Five minutes later, Campbell notched her second of the game off passes from Maguire and McGregor. With just over four minutes remaining, Greenlee netted her first collegiate goal with T. Bell recording the assist.

Natalie Rampton earned the start in goal for Midland and tallied 19 saves on 20 shots. Her counterpart made 32 saves on 37 shots as the Warriors once again controlled the shot totals.

Midland (2-0) will hit the road next weekend as it travels to face Lindenwood (0-0) in a three-game series beginning Friday night in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
