Women’s D1 Announces Community Service Award

Troy, Michigan (4/18/2023) The American Collegiate Hockey Association is proud to recognize Midland University as the Women’s Division I Community Service Award Recipient. The warriors participated in several events to help their community.

The Warriors help to facility the Intro to Hockey program with the Fremont Flyers, a local youth  organization. The team helped throughout the season for sixteen one-hour sessions. The Intro to Hockey program is a 5-week program offered by the YMCA that allows local kids to try hockey. Thirteen of the student-athletes helped size gear for the kids and introduced the kids to hockey for the first time.

In addition to the Intro to Hockey program, they helped with eighteen one-hour mite practices over the course of the season. Thirteen of the student-athletes helped the mite coaches run a practice or a station. They would demonstrate the specific skills at each station and worked with individual players 1 on 1 to help them understand.

The final program the Warriors assisted with was Second Grade Learn to Skate, which was ran by the YMCA and Fremont Public Schools. There were eighteen ice sessions where two student-athletes would attend. The Warriors helped sizing and tying skates. They also helped on the ice with students from six public schools. Many of these second graders had never seen an ice rink or had never been on skates.

Overall, Midland University volunteered 478 hours toward their community this hockey season, all those hours directly impacted the children in Fremont and the surrounding areas.

The ACHA would also like recognize University of Michigan-Dearborn as an honorable mention for this award.
