CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) – The University of Wyoming’s Men’s Club Hockey Team made a stop to the Oil City this weekend not only to put on some scrimmages for Casper, but also host a camp for the mile high mites learn to play hockey program.

Captain of the team Ian Bullard said, “Here it’s, just fundamentals so it’s skating, shooting, passing and then just teaching them that hockey’s just a great, fun sport. Having them just come out here and have fun. Just to interact with all of the kids it’s a great opportunity and experience and so, the more we can do, the better it just becomes for honestly everybody.”

This wasn’t the first time that the club team has hosted camps for the youth, however it was the first time that they done so outside of Laramie.

They had quite the showing at the Casper Ice Arena where more than 20 kids participated in the camp. They hoped to start encouraging all the youth around the state to try out the sport that has such a profound impact on them.

To this Cowboys hockey team sharing the game of hockey is more than just teaching skills to the youth, it’s about fostering an entire community around the sport.

“Hockey’s a great game, it’s given me so much. I’ve developed so much as a person, as a leader through hockey and building these skills, social skills, being you know disciplined athlete is you know is really helpful in every aspect of your life. People say that sports are a great metaphor for life so, you know try to look at it that way,” said Evan Heck, the president of the club team.

While this is the team is getting ready for the upcoming club season, they do have plans to return to Casper one day in the future.
