AMES – The Iowa State women’s club hockey team made a valiant comeback this weekend against North Dakota State, sweeping the Bison in two games.

The series showed the team’s drive and resilience as the Cyclones fought to secure the sweep. Both Friday and Saturday’s games ended with a final score of 4-3.

Iowa State quickly went down 3-0, but sophomore Ellie Volkers broke the ice for the Cyclones, scoring their first goal Friday. The goal was quickly followed by another one, scored by senior Greta Smith.

Sophomore Abigail Moore scored the third goal on Friday night, keeping the pressure on and evening the score. In the third period, Iowa State and NDSU were tied 3-3. The game went into overtime, and Volkers scored to secure the win for the Cyclones.

Saturday’s game was one for the books for sophomore Calli Holmes, tallying the first Cyclones hat trick of the young season. Holmes opened Game 2 with the first goal of the night, setting the pace early.

Holmes scored the second goal, assisted by Volkers, who remained a difference-maker in the second contest.

Freshman Carolyn Brzezinski shot the puck on net, and it ended up being tipped in by Holmes, completing the hat trick and tying the game.

The Bison and the Cyclones were once again tied 3-3 going into the third period. Not even two minutes into the period, Greta Smith scored to make it 4-3. The rest of the period went scoreless for both teams, and Iowa State prevailed.

The Cyclones will get Halloween weekend off, but will return Nov. 7-8 to face Maryville on the Saints’ home ice in St. Louis, Missouri.
