FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University has announced that Jan Dam will continue to head the men’s hockey program after serving as the interim head coach last season. Dam was inserted into the head coaching role midyear of the 2021-22 season after serving as an assistant coach the previous season.

Coach Dam has been with the Warriors’ program since the start of the 2020-21 season. In addition to coaching the Warriors, he has served as the director of player development for the Fremont Flyers and was the head coach of the Flyers’ high school travel team in 2021-22.

In 2022, the Warriors went 4-6-1 during the second semester under Coach Dam. They competed with several ACHA Top 10 teams and earned a 3-0 win over No. 10-ranked Maryville University on home ice in February.

“I would like to thank the Midland administration for the opportunity to lead the men’s program,” said Coach Dam. “Coaching hockey is my passion and I’m excited for the opportunity to continue working with the men’s team. We’ve got a lot of guys returning and will have a solid group of newcomers coming in to help us get better.”

Originally from Liberec, Czech Republic, Dam played hockey in his home country prior to his time with the El Paso Rhinos of the WSHL. He then helped start the ACHA program at the University of Texas-El Paso before moving to Nebraska to work with the Fremont Flyers organization.

“Jan has been a great ambassador to the sport in the Fremont community since moving to Nebraska,” commented Jason White, director of hockey. “He has done a great job with the Flyers and has come into his own with our men’s team these past two years. We’re excited about the direction of the men’s program under his leadership.”

“Jan has been a great addition to our hockey staff over the past couple of years,” commented Courtney Thomsen, Midland Director of Athletics. “We are confident in his ability to lead the team going forward and continue to strengthen the hockey program.”

Along with the announcement of Coach Dam as the men’s head coach, Jason White has been named the Director of Hockey for Midland University. He will oversee both programs while continuing to coach the women’s team. He will assist with the recruiting, scheduling, and operations, and will mentor the Warriors’ hockey coaches.

“Jason continues to raise the standard for our women’s team on the ice, in the classroom, and in the community,” Thomsen added. “His background with men’s and women’s hockey has been invaluable to our student-athletes and we look forward to seeing what the future holds under his guidance.”
