Day in the Life of an IU Hockey Player

From Indiana University Hockey

By Abby Altschul

Tuesdays may not be everyone’s favorite day of the week—often spent recovering from Monday, wishing it was hump day, and still a few days from the weekend. However for Ithan DeLorenzo, a fourth year player on IU’s Hockey team, a Tuesday is no day to slack off.

Ithan’s Tuesday:

8:30am:Alarm rings

Bright and early, despite the few snoozes, Ithan’s ready to start his day.

9am: Gets ready to leave

He eats breakfast with the three other teammates he lives with and gets ready to head out the door.

9:45-11am: Class

Ithan walks over from his apartment to the Kelley School of Business, where he’s studying Finance and Accounting.

12-2pm: Takes a nap

At this hour Ithan’s reached peak exhaustion, so he returns back home to relax and take a nap.

3-4:15pm: Class round two

Once he’s recharged, Ithan heads to his afternoon classes.

4:30-6pm: Homework

For about an hour and a half, Ithan catches up on some homework back at his apartment.

6:30pm: Dinner

No night passes without getting Chipotle with best teammate, Will. Ithan’s go-to order is a bowl with white rice, black beans, chicken, lettuce, and cheese. Not eating this order on game day is a huge superstition of his.

9:45pm: Practice

Ithan sits in the same spot in the locker room each time, just like how he puts his stick in the same spot. These are more superstitions that guarantee a successful practice and/or game.

11pm: Untie skates

There’s nothing better than a great debrief with the team after practice. “We’ll mess around in the locker room and sometimes get ice cream or McDonald’s” – Ithan DeLorenzo

11:15pm: Return home

If neither of the above options happens, Ithan usually will get back before midnight.

1:30am: Bedtime

And finally, Ithan hits the hay. With three more days ahead of him, every minute of sleep counts.

Since the young age of six, hockey has always been Ithan’s passion. With no one in his family having played the sport, it holds an even deeper meaning for him. Ithan has moved around as much as the puck does on the ice at the Frank— originally from New Jersey, he’s lived in Philly, Naperville (Illinois), and now Rhode Island. Despite all the changes in location, his love for hockey has remained constant. If there’s any place that feels like home, it’s the rink.
