Many games were played during December for the Women’s Division 1 American Collegiate Hockey Association teams. Throughout the month, many players shined, but one player, and goaltender stood out the most. These two standout players have been named the December 2021 W1 ACHA National Player and Goaltender of the Month.
Izzy Varner of Indiana Tech has been selected as the December National Goaltender of the Month. Varner, who went 2-0 against the No. 2 Adrian College Bullldogs, faced 86 shots in two games, stopping 83 shots in her two wins. The Warriors goaltender picked up an overtime win, 4-3, over the Bulldogs in game one after making 62 saves, and stopped all 21 shots faced in her shutout win for game two. Varner is currently 9-2-1 this season for the No. 3 Warriors of Indiana Tech, with two shutouts, 282 saves and a .934 save percentage.
Indiana Tech’s Isobel Pettem-Shand has been selected as the December National Player of the Month. The forward grabbed nine total points in four games in the final month of 2021 against opponents Maryville University and Adrian College. Pettem-Shand had a single goal and three assists in the series split with Maryville, while the freshman tallied 3 points (1g, 2a) in the 4-3 OT win against Adrian, her lone goal being the game-winner in overtime. Pettem-Shand also put in the only two goals in the 2-0 win over Adrian to complete the sweep of fellow CCWHA league member. Currently, Pettem-Shand leads the No. 3 Warriors in points (37) and assists (27) and averages 2.18 points per game after the first half of the season.
