NEVILLE Twp., Pa. — In stark contrast to Friday night’s 5-2 win, the Robert Morris Colonials took Saturday afternoon’s game down to the wire to secure a 2-1 victory over the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers at Clearview Arena at the RMU Island Sports Center.
It was a battle of defense and goaltending.
Colonials goaltender Carson Frye was solid in net, stopping 31 of 32 shots. Tigers goaltender Bennett Law was equally impressive, stopping 32 of 34 shots. In the end, it all came down to who took advantage of the rare scoring opportunities.
One such opportunity came late in the third period for Robert Morris. With just over five minutes remaining and the score tied 1-1, Colonials defenseman Lucca Laquatra went to the box for roughing. After RMU killed the penalty, Laquatra needed just 21 seconds out of the box to make up for it. He buried the go-ahead goal behind Law with less than three minutes left in the game. Despite a last-second gasp from the Tigers, Frye held his ground — or rather, ice — to backstop the 2-1 win.
For the most part, it was a quiet game. Besides a tripping penalty in the first period to RIT forward Adam Low, the game was uneventful until late in the second. With less than two minutes left in the period, Matthew Stelitano broke the scoreless battle to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead. After a scuffle at the end of the second period led to an uneventful 4-on-4 to start the third, Andres Hedin tied the game 1-1 at 8:31 of the third period, but it was all that RIT could muster.
