ICE BEARS NAME NEXT DIVISION I HEAD COACH

Tom Winkler becomes the sixth bench boss in Ice Bears’ history

 

April 8, 2023 – The Missouri State University Ice Bears, a Division 1 member of  the American Collegiate Hockey Association, announce the hiring of Tom Winkler as  Division 1 Head Coach.

Winkler becomes the third Division 1 head coach since the team moved from Division 2 play at the start of the 2015-2016 season, and sixth head coach in the history of the organization.

Winkler arrives at Missouri State after spending the 2022-23 season with the Lindenwood Lions (NCAA D1) as an assistant coach. He had previous successful seasons with the Huntsville Havoc of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) serving in several roles which included assistant coach, Director of Player Development, and corporate relations.

Early in his coaching career, Winkler devoted time in the NAHL with the Bozeman Icedogs and the Shreveport Mudbugs. He has also been a coach and General Manager with the St. Louis Jr. Blues, Hampton Roads Whalers, Gillette Wild, and the Point Mallard Ducks.

While at Hampton Roads, Winkler had the opportunity to work with the Norfolk Admirals (AHL) through a coaching internship.

Winkler is a St. Louis native having played hockey with Christian Brothers College (CBC) High School and in college at Norwich University.

“I am extremely excited and appreciative to be here, and I am looking forward to working with everyone,” said Winkler.

Missouri State finished the 2022-23 season ranked No. 24 in the final ACHA Division 1 poll. The Ice Bears ended the 2021-22 season ranked No. 10 in Division 1.

The Ice Bears I.D. Camp for prospective players will be held on June 10-11 at Jordan Valley Ice Park.
