The Hope College ice hockey team corralled the Stallions of Western Michigan University, sweeping the weekend ACHA series with 12-1 and 13-3 victories.
The Flying Dutchmen are now off to a 6-0 start to the season.
Seven different Hope players recorded their first goals of the season during the series: freshman defenseman Harrison Blecke (Essexville, Michigan / Midland HS), junior forward Daniel Ferrier (Bloomington, Illinois / Bloomington Community), sophomore defenseman Dylan Kingsbury (Saginaw, Michigan / Nouvel Catholic Central), freshman defenseman Colton Laufer (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian), senior defenseman Gavin O’Brien (Howell, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central), freshman defenseman Collin Peal (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian), and sophomore right wing Nolan Sanders (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow).
On Saturday, freshman right wing Griffin Riemersma (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) recorded a hat trick by scoring three of the Flying Dutchmen’s first four goals.
Sophomore forward Keegan McNamara (Linden, Michigan / Fenton) chipped in two goals.
On Friday, Riemersma, sophomore forward Hunter Maschke (Portage, Michigan / Portage Central) and sophomore defenseman Michael Stechschulte (Rochester, Michigan / Cranbrook Kingswood) each scored twice.
Hope led 4-0 after the first period.
Hope’s next series is on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 27-28, against the University of Notre Dame.
Friday’s game is at 7:30 p.m. at home at Griff’s IceHouse West. Saturday’s game is at 8:15 p.m. on the road.
