Mines Club Ice Hockey opened its weekend series against Colorado Mesa University with a 2-2 tie Friday night before falling 4-1 in Saturday’s rematch at River City Sportsplex in Grand Junction.
The Orediggers faced an early 2-0 deficit Friday but responded with a strong second period to even the score. Zach Sanner scored his first career goal for Mines, followed by a goal from Scott Macdonald to bring the game to 2-2.
Both teams continued to create scoring opportunities throughout the final two periods, but neither could find the back of the net again. The matchup ended in a 2-2 tie after a competitive finish.
Mines returned Saturday night looking to build on Friday’s result but once again found itself trailing early, with Colorado Mesa taking a 3-0 lead in the first period. The Orediggers continued to push and got on the board in the third when Henry Sperling scored Mines’ lone goal of the game. Colorado Mesa added an empty-net goal with 30 seconds remaining to secure a 4-1 win.
Despite the results, Mines saw contributions from multiple players throughout the weekend and will look to carry those positives forward as the team prepares for its next series.
