University of Rhode Island heads on the road for a game against Penn State University

TROY, Mich. – (October 3, 2023) – The Penn State University women’s hockey team was started in the ‘90s. The team finished last season ranked 26th. They had eight Academic All-Americans last season.

“With a lot of new talent in addition to our veteran players, our team is very solid. We have great leadership from the older girls and rookies who are already stepping up in big ways. I would say that this team is probably the best we’ve had in my four years in the program, and I am excited to see how we progress throughout the season,” said Jessica Ware, Penn State Assistant Captain.

Rhode Island University womens’ hockey team was founded in 1999. The team was ACHA National Tournament runner-up in 2004. They team has had twelve tournament appearances since 2004. The team finished last season ranked 25th. They had four Academic All-Americans last season. The Rams have ushered in a new coach, Nicole Friesen.

When these teams met for a two game series during the 2022-2023 season, both teams each won one of the games in overtime by a score of 5-4. During the 2021-2022 season, these teams split the series as well. Rhode Island won 3-2 in regulation and Penn State won 3-0. We expect the closeness of this series to continue again this season.

In addition to being members of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), Penn State is a member of the Central Collegiate Women’s Hockey Association (CCWHA). Information about the ACHA can be found at achahockey.org and information on the CCWHA can be found at CCWHA.net. Rhode Island was previously a member of the Eastern Collegiate Women’s Hockey League (ECWHL), but is currently an independent.
