AMES, Iowa – Playing one game at home and another on the road, Midland University took on its closest opponent, Iowa State University, this weekend. On Friday afternoon, the Warriors hosted the Cyclones in Fremont where they came away with a hard-fought 4-3 victory. Saturday saw Iowa State earn the one-goal victory on its home ice in Ames, 1-0.
FRIDAY: Midland 4, Iowa State 3
Iowa State notched the first goal on Friday afternoon in Fremont, scoring on a powerplay chance just past the midway point of the opening period. They would take that lead back to the dressing rooms for the first intermission.
After the break, Midland got on the board as Matthew McCaw found the back of the net off a feed from Jack Olson at the 5:37 mark. Two minutes later, the Warriors scored the go-ahead goal as Logan Wotton scored on the powerplay. Assisting on the score were Zach Eddington and Fletcher Chun at the 7:16 mark.
The Cyclones answered back with a powerplay chance of their own at the 12:31 mark. Less than a minute later, MU struck for its third goal of the contest as Jared Wisely found a gap in the defense off a feed from Zach Weber. Before the period ended, ISU would find the equalizer with 3:26 on the clock.
In the third, Midland was quick to get the lead back as Andy Larsen netted a goal just past the first minute. Tommy Wardas and Ryan Donovan teamed up to assist on the would-be game-winning goal at the 1:04 mark.
Solid defense by the Warriors in front of Liam Tereposky sealed the victory for MU. Tereposky picked up 22 saves in the win.
SATURDAY: Iowa State 1, Midland 0
The final game of the weekend series shifted to Ames, Iowa on Saturday night as the Cyclones served as the home team, playing in front of their fans, family, and alumni.
After a scoreless and penalty-free opening period of action, Iowa State was able to put a goal past Midland’s defense at the 5:48 mark. The goal came as ISU was killing a minor for interference by one of its forwards.
While that was the first and only goal of the game, it wasn’t the only penalty. ISU would get saddled with four more minors and a 10-minute major, MU was whistled for a pair of minors. The Warriors were unable to find the equalizer as the Cyclones’ defense stood firm.
Liam Tereposky was dealt the loss despite collecting 27 saves. His counterpart on the other end of the ice had 33 saves.
Midland (8-9-1) will be off next weekend with Thanksgiving Break taking place. The Warriors’ next set of games will be in two weeks when they travel to take on Waldorf (2-15-2). The teams will drop the puck at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 1, and at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 2 in Albert Lea, Minnesota.
