MANDAN, ND – Behind the power of six second period goals, #11 University of Mary buried #8 University of Jamestown 8-0 in the Midwest College Hockey opener and the first game this season of The Jug series.
The Marauders improved to 3-0-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL), with all three victories coming against teams receiving American Collegiate Hockey Association Men’s Division 1 poll recognition. Playing their season opener, the Jimmies are 0-1-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL).
UMary opened the scoring at 12:00 on an Issac Flatley goal. Joe Gronholz followed at 17:41 with a power play goal to send the Marauders leading 2-0 entering the first intermission.
The Marauders broke the game open with a pair of 3-goal outbursts in the second.
Flatley scored his second goal of the game at 4:05. Within the next 3:08, Dylan Cunningham scored a shorthanded goal before Hunter Mangan ran the UMary lead to 5-0 and chasing Jimmies starting goaltender Brandon Weare, a 3-time All-MCH performer, from the game.
UMary crushed the visitor’s spirits with another 3-goal outburst late in the second. David Loahr tallied at 16:27, followed by Gronholz at 16:37 and Will Falconer at 18:57 to give the Marauders an 8-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Caleb Cross was perfect in net for the Marauders. In front of a raucous homecoming crowd, Cross turned away all 31 shots he faced.
Gronholz and Flatley both had two goals and Gronholz added an assist to his total. Dain Sardelli assisted on four goals and John Lang and Andrew Brubakken had three assists each. Cunningham and Mangan both paired a goal with an assist.
The Marauders have now won two straight over the Jimmies with Cross posting two consecutive shutouts. Cross has 23 saves in a 1-0 UMary win in the 2026 MCH semifinals as Gronholz scored the lone goal.
The Jug series continues Saturday, October 3, when the two I-94 rivals reverse sites and face off in Jamestown, ND, in a 7 pm match.
