Lindenwood Finishes Weekend with Second Win over ASU

From Lindenwood University Athletics

For the second time in three days, women’s ACHA ice hockey faced Arizona State in a neutral-ice contest Sunday afternoon, and for the second time, the Lions earned a win against the Sun Devils, this time by a score of 3-2 at the Jordan Valley Ice Park in Springfield, Missouri.

After a chippy game Friday night, Lindenwood played more under control, earning only three penalties, but despite that, only two of the five goals scored overall were at even strength.  The Lions took an early lead on the first of those when Kennedy Frank sounded the horn with an unassisted effort at the 2:34 mark of the first period.  However, it didn’t last long as ASU countered with its own even strength goal two minutes later.  After a Sun Devils interference penalty, Brookelyn Bell split the pipes off a feed from Risa Shatford at 5:37 to make it 2-1.

The Lions increased their advantage midway through the second when Bell set up MacKenzie Drost on the power play at 8:58.  Lindenwood was called for too many on the ice a few moments later and Arizona State capitalized to make it 3-2, but that proved to be the final score of the game as the Lions held on for their third victory of the weekend.

Lindenwood outshot the Sun Devils 40 to 38 and Maia Busi stopped 36 of the 38 pucks she faced to earn the win in goal.

With the victory, the Lions improved to 5-2-1 overall.  They face another three-game weekend away from home ice November 5-7 with two games against Maryville and one versus McKendree.  The puck drops at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon and at 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon for the games against the Saints at the Maryville Hockey Center in Chesterfield, Missouri, and at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon versus the Bearcats at the McKendree Rec-Plex in Lebanon, Illinois.  All three games are in conference in Women’s Midwest Collegiate Hockey action.
