Iverson Hat Trick Offset by Three Maryville Power Play Goals in Women’s ACHA Hockey Season Opener

From Lindenwood Athletics

Freshman Haylee Iverson scored the first three goals of the game for Lindenwood to earn her first collegiate hat trick, but it wasn’t enough to overcome three power play scores from Maryville as women’s ACHA hockey fell to the Saints 6-4 Saturday night at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.

Maryville took a 1-0 lead at the 7:50 mark of the first, but Iverson responded 18-seconds later off a feed from Risa Shatford. The Saints jumped in front again on the man-advantage after a Lions slashing penalty, but Iverson found the equalizer with help from Madison Teague at 19:04.

Lindenwood took a holding penalty in the opening minutes of the second and Maryville capitalized with another power play goal for a 3-2 advantage. The Saints stretched that margin to 4-2 on their third man-advantage opportunity at the 8:15 mark, but Iverson completed her hat trick 38-seconds later to keep the Lions in the contest down 4-3. The two squads continued to trade goals in the waning moments of the period. Maryville sounded the horn first at 16:07 and Lindenwood answered off the blade of Shatford in just 20-seconds, assisted by Annika Asplundh, but that proved to be the last offense for the Lions in the frame as the Saints now led 5-4.

After the flurry of offensive activity, the rest of game settled into more of a defensive struggle. Maryville put the final marker on the board with 4:06 remaining in regulation to seal the victory.

The Saints went 3/4 on the power play while Lindenwood went scoreless on two man-advantage chances. Maia Busi took the tough loss in goal for the Lions, who opened the season 0-1 in Women’s Midwest Collegiate Hockey (WMCH) action as well as overall.
