The Massachusetts women’s club hockey team claimed victory in a 2-0 shutout at home against Colorado on Sunday. The Minutewomen’s (5-5) offensive pressure secured the commanding shutout, tallying 48 total shots on goal compared to the Buffaloes’ (7-4) seven attempts.

Hannah Gromko sealed UMass’s win with 2:57 left in the game. Addy Harrington stole the puck away from Colorado’s Mia Fiscelli, sending it over to Gromko, who drove the puck up the ice before snapping it into the top right of the Buffaloes’ net. The senior’s goal marked her second of the season.

Riley Evans opened the Minutewomen’s scoring just four minutes into the second period. With two defenders on her, Evans sent the puck from the left corner of the rink to the five-hole, sneaking the puck in behind the Buffaloes’ goalkeeper Shira Wein. The junior picked up two goals earlier in the weekend in an exhibition game against MCLA before putting UMass’s first point on the board.

The Minutewomen continued building momentum after taking the lead, finishing the first two periods with 34 shots on goal compared to Colorado’s six. UMass created several promising chances, including a breakaway opportunity, but Wein repeatedly denied their attempts.

Wein posted a standout performance with 46 saves, finishing the game with a save percentage of .959.

Senior captain for the Minutewomen, Sarah Matthews, earned her third shutout of the season with seven saves at the goal crease. Matthews’ key saves allowed UMass to maintain its advantage to secure the win.

Both teams played an aggressive game from the start yet closed out the first period scoreless. The Minutewomen had a breakaway within the first minute of the game, but the play fell through after the Buffaloes picked off the puck. Colorado generated few scoring opportunities, with only three shots on target in the opening frame. UMass ended the period with 16 shots on goal.

The Minutewomen continued to apply pressure in the offensive zone throughout the second and third periods, forcing the Buffaloes to heavily rely on their defense. UMass’s ability to generate scoring chances kept Colorado on its heels, while their defensive effort limited the visitors’ opportunities to respond.

UMass maintained its composure late in the third period, protecting its one-goal lead before Gromko’s late goal secured the shutout victory, capping off a commanding performance on both ends of the ice.

The Minutewomen committed two penalties in the second period. Shea Mcdonald’s two-minute penalty for slashing resulted in the Buffaloes’ first power play of the matchup. However, Colorado couldn’t capitalize, as the UMass blue line held off any advances. The second penalty came late into the second period when Alyssa Temple received two minutes for interference.

Though the penalty didn’t deter the Minutewomen. Ivorie Arguin flew down the ice near the end of the power play, taking a direct shot on the Buffaloes’ goal, but it was saved by Wein. Colorado finished the game without any penalties.

The Minutewomen came into the game as No. 9 in the American Collegiate Hockey Association’s first team rankings of the season, directly in front of the Buffaloes, who sit at No. 10.

Sunday’s contest was UMass’s final home game until early February. The Minutewomen return to the ice on Friday, Nov. 20, for their away series against Rhode Island. Puck drop at the Brad Boss Ice Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
